I've never had to cancel a show before!

READER"S ART 13 is cancelled!

For the first time in my 15 years or so of curating shows, I did not receive sufficient numbers of proposed artworks to create a show that coheres. I usually receive images for around 100-125 books from which I fashion a show of around 90 books.  This year I received 40 books, only 25 of which "play together pretty well."  As a consequence, I am canceling Reader's Art 13 for this year. This is not a reflection on the quality of the particular works, nor on my willingness to show it.  It is my responsibility to show the work in a way that enhances it, advances the field of artists books, and creates a coherent experience for the clientele. A show that looks scatter-shot does not fulfill these requirements and, indeed, hurts us all. I will, from time to time, share images of some of the artwork proposed.  There really were many lovely pieces  and I would like to share them with you. It is my hope to resume the show next year and to complete the cycle of Reader's Art in 2015.  At the end of the Reader's Art 15 show I plan to publish a catalog of the fifteen years of this show. Oh My! What an Opening!

Deb put on her best duds and a beautiful smile and welcomed the crush of people who came out to experience this singular work of art.

Within the "canning room," as we were calling it during the build, Deb chats with Orrie Rutchik of the Minneapolis Photo Center.  The room was full of people, dazzled and delighted by the glowing jars.  Deb's Husband, Andy McQuigg was far form the only person who had to touch the jars.  At one point in the evening I stood and watched people giggling like little children making the lighted jars dance.

Deb's Dad, painter Joe Miller, flew in from the west coast to assist with the completion of the work, and , of course, to be the proud Papa at the show.


The soaring video was the great unifier of the show...spanning distance and time, the relationship of self and other.

The twins, Rebecca and Debora, confer on a phone call with Rebecca's children home on Long Island.

The gallery is open Mondays 10-5 and on other days and evenings, by very generous appointment.

Painting the proscenium

 It may or may not be a proscenium...although we  have been referring to it as a stage...but upside down.

The projector is placed, the window transparencies have begun to find their way to the windows.

All things are moving ahead in good order.

Food and beverage are purchased and chilling

So, the public unveiling is Friday!

 Andy McQuigg and Deb Miller are still hard at work installing the temporary ceiling which will establish the "stage" for the installation I'm not me, she's over there.


Huge cedar beams span the gallery space, establishing place, beginning to create the location for a numinous experience .

Helpers make light work

It's a mystery!

On a lovely sunny, Sunday, work has begun in earnest! Andy has been spending the day in the rafters...or more precisely, making rafters. A room is taking form inside the room of the gallery.  The cedar rafters will become Deb's new bed frame.  You read it here!  It's a deal!
