I am so pleased to share this with you. The collaborative suite of photographs, I DWELL IN IMPOSSIBILITY, that my son John and I worked on, is about to be exhibited in its entirety for the second time on roughly five years, and he is flying in from Boston to be at the opening!

John is a powerful artist and thinker in his own right. We have collaborated before

and would more often,I suspect, if Boston weren't so far away! The idea for this

began many years ago while I was at a residency in Illinois. I wondered what it meant

when a woman wore a "power suit." Time passed, I aged and I wondered what would

it mean if a grey-haired woman, with a "pregnant belly" wore a "power suit?"

As luck would have it, I had shoulder surgery and John flew out to check up on me.

We talked some more about the idea. He costumed me, I took my drugs and he

directed me. The photoshoot brought out all kinds of dissonances concerning age,

gender and power.

It has been a very successful group of artworks. Portions of this suite have been

exhibited all across the country.

Do come and meet him and say "HI" to me as well.

In Other News

Feast or famine; Flood or drought.

That is the way of the art world. You send out failing proposals, rejection after

rejection seemingly forever. And then the dam breaks and you are overwhelmed with

opportunities for exhibition. The studio is at "flood stage" right now!

Guild, as part of the Surface Design Association shows.

University as part of the Surface Design Association festivities.

And, by the time you see me again, I will be a "Certified Ricoma Technician." But,

please, do not try to hire me! I am taking an intensive course on maintaining and

repairing my new commercial embroidery machine!

From Rust Belt to Artist Belt

April 2010...

"Wayne State University's TechTown led the city's bid for the conference, working with a number of other local organizations, including The Heidelberg Project, Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design and WSU College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts.

The group should know in the next couple of weeks when the conference will be held, said Julie Brock, development director for TechTown.

TechTown has hired Leslie Sobel, an independent artist from Milan and president of the Milan Area Arts Council, to help plan the conference and to expand participation of arts organizations beyond Detroit to those in other Southeast Michigan counties, Brock said.

“The conference is centered on the idea that rust belt cities are the perfect breeding ground for new artists, with low-cost living, industrial spaces and open land you can't get in New York or (Los Angeles,)” Brock said.

“Because it's been so successful in Cleveland the past two years, they wanted one of the other rust belt cities to take it.”"

Wonderful Stuff!

COMMUNION opened Saturday, April 18, with a shared meal and a wonderful discussion about art and fashion among Jon Coffelt, Carolyn G. Halliday, Kathleen Richert and Betsy Dollar.
Issues of identity and the stories we tell with our clothes were discussed.
I love the shadows cast by the little clothes!
Jon told the individual stories of many of the hand stitched clothes...like the story of Marlee; the story of the prom dress; the story of Ruth Bernhard's memorial to Stonewall; the story of Matushka's mastectomy dress designed by Versace; The soldier PJs that memorialized the "last camping trip." And so many more.
