Oh My! What an Opening!

Deb put on her best duds and a beautiful smile and welcomed the crush of people who came out to experience this singular work of art.

Within the "canning room," as we were calling it during the build, Deb chats with Orrie Rutchik of the Minneapolis Photo Center.  The room was full of people, dazzled and delighted by the glowing jars.  Deb's Husband, Andy McQuigg was far form the only person who had to touch the jars.  At one point in the evening I stood and watched people giggling like little children making the lighted jars dance.

Deb's Dad, painter Joe Miller, flew in from the west coast to assist with the completion of the work, and , of course, to be the proud Papa at the show.


The soaring video was the great unifier of the show...spanning distance and time, the relationship of self and other.

The twins, Rebecca and Debora, confer on a phone call with Rebecca's children home on Long Island.

Reader's Art 12: Longing for Home   

Maggie Miller:

"The project is a visual interpretation of the book Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino.   Calvino’s book is a dialogue between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan as Marco Polo reports on the vast Tartar Empire through the lens of personal insights that arise from interactions each place.  A fourteen odd page mixed media piece, working with pop-up architecture and found prints, my work creates vignettes of Khan’s cities, participating in the conversation as a reader reflecting on Polo’s discoveries about the relationship between self and setting.  The viewer is given a chance to engage with a city fully assembled, stretching out as an accordion of compiled images and quotations.  Closed, pop-ups retreat back into blank pages, just as Calvino’s cities themselves are in essence bare canvases.  Prints draw on the discussions of the limitations of language in establishing a common vernacular of experience. "

Reader's Art 12: Longing for Home  Mary Bergs and Beth Dorsey are Minneapolis artists who collaborate. For the Reader’s Art Exhibition they are creating a collaborative book. Using the structure of an accordion book they plan to visually explore the concept of home as:
